TURKEY - SAILING IN THE MIDST OF ORIENT AND OXIDENT, MODERN LIFE AND ANTIQUITY

There is hardly any sailing area in the world, that has experienced such an increasing popularity in the last years as the turkish aegaen and mediterranean areas.

The turkish "sailing paradise" with the magnificant turkish coastline as well as the short distance to the greek islands and the fascinating mixture of ancient and modern culture makes this area very attractive. Several new, even luxerious marinas, old, romantic harbours, a constant improving service efficiency, hospitality, good prices, lonely, unspoilt and sheltered bays with clear, turquoise water and the possibility tocombine the cruise with sailing along the turkish coast as well as in the greec archeopag, are some of the many reasons for this popularity.

Wind and weather

Turkey has exellent sailing conditons with dayly 10 hours  sunshine.

The Aegean region around Çeşme have frequently northern winds. The summer winds, Meltemi, between late June and early September, are well known and respected through ages. The Meltemy wind normally starts late afternoon with a strength from 3 to 6 Beaufort. Do not feel prevented from sailing even if the wind in some areas, like the streets of Chios or Karabarun or on the caps and on some special days even might be stronger. When in the streets the strength might be 5 Beaufort, you might have 3 Beaufort in the area around. The Meltemi passes in the evening, some times with some heavy downbursts.

The huge advantage of the Meltemy wind is that even the mid-summer months, which are in July-August, have pleasant temperatures and provides nice sailing wind. The bays facing south are frequently used because of the northern winds.

Due to the wind conditions: Be sure that you have enough anchor chains and good anchor holding.

The weahter and wind in September and October are still very pleasant until late in the evening. The months of May and June have nice summer temperatures and April, which is more springlike, is normally a very good month for sailing.

It is wice to plan the voyage according to the regional conditions, like chosing routes which avvoids sailing agaist the Meltemi etc.

And if you still want/will have to confront the nothern winds, - no problem, due to the excellent sailing and technical conditions of our yachts. You will find more informations onboard.

The Meltemi thermal wind (May to October) peaks in July and
